About twenty minutes after leaving San Jos\u00e9, we will drive into Braulio Carrillo National Park<\/strong>. Ranging from high-altitude\u00a0cloud forests<\/a>\u00a0to lowlands\u00a0tropical rainforest<\/a>, this park has one of the highest levels of\u00a0biodiversity<\/a>\u00a0in Costa Rica. We will continue to Gu\u00e1piles, and from there to Tortuguero National Park<\/strong>, the gateway to Costa Rica\u00b4s Caribbean<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Tortuguero National Park<\/strong> is located on the Caribbean<\/strong> coast of Lim\u00f3n<\/strong> province, about 80 km northeast of the city of the same name. The Costa Rican legislature declared Tortuguero as a National Park<\/strong> in November 1975 to protect the nesting of the sea turtles, the beach and the adjacent terrestrial habitats.\u00a0 It has an area of 26.256 hectares in the land part and 50.160 in the marine zone.<\/p>\n

There are no roads to Tortuguero<\/strong>. Access is by boat from Mo\u00edn near Puerto Lim\u00f3n or from La Pavona Port or Ca\u00f1o Blanco. It can also be reached by a small plane from San Jos\u00e9. In order to visit Tortuguero National Park<\/strong> we will embark you on a river boat that will take you along Costa Rica\u2019s north Caribbean coast through an extensive system of canals. Tortuguero<\/strong>, also called \u201cthe Amazonian Costa Rica\u201d<\/em> is one of the most fascinating and popular destinations in our tour.<\/p>\n

Tortuguero<\/strong> literally means \u201cland of turtles\u201d.<\/i> It is no wonder that they are the main attraction of this\u00a0National Park<\/strong>.\u00a0 Green (Chelonia mydas mydas<\/i>\u00a0), leatherback (Dermochelys coriacea<\/i>) and hawksbill (Eretmochelys imbricata<\/i>) sea turtles nest on these beaches.\u00a0 Green sea turtles neared extinction due to hunting of the adults for meat (they are easy prey when they nest) for turtle soup, and poaching of eggs.\u00a0 The nesting season for leatherback and green turtles goes from July to October.\u00a0 If lucky enough, you might just get to watch turtle hatchlings emerging from their nests and racing into the ocean.<\/p>\n

Dr. Archie Carr<\/strong> of the University of Florida<\/strong> formed the Caribbean Conservation Corporation<\/strong> (now called\u00a0 The Sea Turtle Conservancy<\/strong>) in 1959 to study and protect sea turtles, and the turtle-tagging program he began at Tortuguero<\/strong> in 1955 continues until today.<\/p>\n

The park has an important\u00a0biological diversity due to the existence within the reserve of eleven different\u00a0habitats<\/a>, including: \u00a0rainforest<\/a>,\u00a0mangrove<\/a>\u00a0forests, swamps<\/a>,\u00a0beaches<\/a>, and\u00a0lagoons<\/a>. The park was recognized under\u00a0Ramsar Convention<\/a>\u00a0on 1991 for its rich biological diversity and ecosystems (especially wetlands) that support threatened flora and fauna species.\u00a0The wildlife in this area is very diverse, there are usually large populations of monkeys, amphibians, birds and fish. The resident wildlife includes tapirs, jaguars, sloths, frogs, macaws, toucans and bats.<\/p>\n

This is one of the rainiest areas of Costa Rica<\/strong><\/a>, and even in the dry season afternoon showers are common. Rain is between 5,000 and 6,000 mm per year. We can distinguish two types of rain:\u00a0 that of short duration which is the most common, and the tropical downpour rain characteristic of the Caribbean<\/strong> that may last up to 15 days. The latter is usually caused by winds from the north and northwest, related to existent low pressure systems.<\/p>\n

You will also have some time to stroll through the little town of Tortuguero<\/strong> and the museum of the green turtle, during the afternoon. The park has worked closely with the neighboring village to help its inhabitants understand that preserving their natural resources is key to encourage\u00a0eco-tourism<\/a> and sustainable development.<\/p>\n
