The most notable characteristic\u00a0is the beautiful canoe-shapped\u00a0bill with vivid colors. Its habitat and distribution goes from the tropical side of <strong>M\u00e9xico<\/strong>\u00a0to northern <strong>Colombia and Venezuela<\/strong>. \u00a0However in <strong>Costa Rica<\/strong>\u00a0it is a common resident of the lowland forests of the Caribbean coast; the population decreases towards the north on the <strong>Pacific side and the Central Valley<\/strong>, but it is also very common in the lower outskirts of the\u00a0<strong>Guanacaste Mountain Range, the Nicoya Pen\u00ednsula<\/strong> and some areas of the<strong> Osa Pen\u00ednsula<\/strong>. \u00a0In a bird watching tour, it\u00b4s going to be one of the first guests checked into your bird list!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4714\" src=\"https:\/\/www.elementonatural.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/laparoja.png\" alt=\"Bird watching in Costa Rica\" width=\"960\" height=\"420\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.elementonatural.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/laparoja.png 960w, https:\/\/www.elementonatural.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/laparoja-300x131.png 300w, https:\/\/www.elementonatural.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/laparoja-768x336.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Scarlet Macaw:<\/strong>\u00a0this gorgeous bird represents\u00a0<strong>Honduras<\/strong>. \u00a0It has an intense red color, mixed with other vivid colors; the beauty of its fly and the fact that they are monogamous (so the mostly fly in couples), make of this species a unique finding for any bird-watcher. You could find it virtually anywhere in the country back in the\u00a070\u00b4s, but now it\u00b4s not that easy. However, it can be added to your checklist if you visit the\u00a0<strong>Centra<\/strong>l <strong>Pacific<\/strong>: el <strong>Carara National\u00a0Park <\/strong>and<strong>\u00a0T\u00e1rcoles<\/strong>\u00a0are excellent destinations to watch the scarlet macaws, and nowadays it is more and more common to find them as you move down south on the Pacific coast line. In fact, the other perfect area to find the\u00a0<i>ara macao<\/i>\u00a0is the <strong>Osa Peninsula<\/strong>. The other species of macaw that lives in <strong>Costa Rica<\/strong>\u00a0is the great green macaw, <i>ara ambigua<\/i>, that can be found in the northern lowlands. Those are, without a doubt, two of the species you will want to spot in your next birding tour in\u00a0<strong>Costa Rica<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4713\" src=\"https:\/\/www.elementonatural.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/quetzal.png\" alt=\"Bird watching in Costa Rica\" width=\"960\" height=\"420\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.elementonatural.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/quetzal.png 960w, https:\/\/www.elementonatural.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/quetzal-300x131.png 300w, https:\/\/www.elementonatural.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/quetzal-768x336.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Resplendent Quetzal:<\/strong>\u00a0some say it\u00b4s one of the most beautiful birds in the world, and it\u00b4s <strong>Guatemala\u00b4s <\/strong>national bird! Bird watchers think it is easier to spot it in the area called los\u00a0<strong>Santos in\u00a0Dota, Costa Rica<\/strong>. It is a\u00a0trogon which\u00b4s scientific name is <strong><i>pharomachrus mocinno<\/i><\/strong>. It lives in the highland cloud forests, so it can also be found in <strong>Monteverde<\/strong>. \u00a0However, if you include <strong>San Gerardo de Dota<\/strong>\u00a0in your bird watching expedition, the sighting of the quetzal is practically guaranteed all year long. On top of that, you will enjoy an amazing natural cloud forest landscape, with the rivers, waterfalls, birds and wild life in general: this is definitely one of our most recommended locations for a spectacular vacation in Costa Rica.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4720\" src=\"https:\/\/www.elementonatural.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/momoto.png\" alt=\"Bird watching in Costa Rica\" width=\"960\" height=\"420\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.elementonatural.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/momoto.png 960w, https:\/\/www.elementonatural.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/momoto-300x131.png 300w, https:\/\/www.elementonatural.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/momoto-768x336.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Turquoise-browed motmot:<\/strong>\u00a0this small but beautiful bird represents both\u00a0<strong>El Salvador<\/strong> (since\u00a01999) and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.elementonatural.com\/tours\/discovering-nicaragua\/\" xlink=\"href\"><strong>Nicaragua<\/strong> <\/a>(since 1971). \u00a0The locals in\u00a0<strong>El Salvador<\/strong>\u00a0call it &#8220;torogoz&#8221; and in\u00a0<strong>Nicaragua<\/strong>\u00a0they call it &#8220;<em><strong>guardabarranco&#8221;<\/strong><\/em>, the scientific name being <strong><i>eumomota superciliosa<\/i><\/strong>. It lives in less dense forests along with cleared areas, and it spends much of their time perched among tree branches and fences,\u00a0moving their tail side to side. It is the biggest eagle in\u00a0America, the female tends to be bigger than the male, reaching a wingspan of two meters. It feeds from other tree-dwelling species\u00a0like\u00a0monkeys, sloths or iguanas, prey that they can easily snatch from the tree branches with their powerful claws or talons. It\u00b4s <strong>Panam\u00e1\u00b4s national bird<\/strong>, and many institutions are devoted to protectem over there; it is also a national symbol for biodiversity in <strong>Ecuador<\/strong>. Of all the bird species mentioned in this blog, <strong><i>harpia harpyja <\/i><\/strong>is the most endangered one, and rarely seen: you would be really lucky if you find it in your\u00a0<strong>Costa Rica birding expedition<\/strong>, and you would need to go deep into the highlands of\u00a0Talamanca. \u00a0You will possibly get a better chance if you go bird watching in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.elementonatural.com\/tours\/bird-watching-in-panama-the-harpy-eagle\/\" xlink=\"href\">Panam\u00e1<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>with us.<\/p>\n<p>We have only mentioned five bird species, all of them beautiful and important in <strong>Central America<\/strong>.
