If you speak these words to any \u201ctico\u201d<\/em><\/strong> they will totally understand and empathize with you. These nine words are an essential part of Costa Rican culture and key to understanding local people and their sayings.<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s begin:<\/p>\n

\"learn<\/p>\n


\nChepe:<\/strong> Costa Rica\u2019s capital, San Jos\u00e9, is referred to colloquially as \u201cChepe\u201d<\/em><\/strong>. The word is also used as nickname for people named Jos\u00e9.<\/p>\n

Examples of use: Today I have to go to Chepe. My friend here is Chepe (Jos\u00e9).<\/em><\/p>\n

\"learn<\/p>\n

Chiva:<\/strong> It is used as a local expression to communicate\u00a0that something is nice or \u201creally cool\u201d<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Examples of use: That\u2019s really \u201cchiva\u201d! We went on a trip to the mountain it was chiv\u00edsima (superlative of the word chiva).<\/em><\/p>\n

\"learn<\/p>\n

Chunche:<\/strong> This word is used to refer to anything, any physical object or thing can be referred to as \u201cchunche\u201d<\/em><\/strong>. This expression is often used when forgetting the name of an object. Carlos Gallini, author of the book \u201cDiccionario de Costarrique\u00f1ismos\u201d<\/em><\/strong> states that the word “chunche”<\/em><\/strong> is a derivation of the Quechua word ‘chunchulli’.<\/p>\n

Examples of use: Give me that chunche that\u2019s above the table. I have bought many chunches.<\/em><\/p>\n

\"learn<\/p>\n

Diay:<\/strong> This is a typical tag word (or pet phrase) used by Costa Ricans in conversations. It can be used as a greeting or as a complaint and replacing the word \u201cbecause\u201d<\/em>.
\nExamples of use: -Diay, How are you? – Diay, I\u2019m doing fine. – Diay, I was\u00a0travelling, that\u2019s why I am happy.<\/em><\/p>\n

\"learn<\/p>\n

Mae:<\/strong> One of the most popular slangs. It is used as a noun concerning a person, for example: “that mae”<\/em><\/strong> means that boy or girl. It is similar to the word \u201cdude\u201d<\/em> <\/strong>in English. However, it is also a catch phrase used in any sentence.<\/p>\n

Examples of use: Mae , how interesting! It\u2019s raining, mae.<\/em><\/p>\n

\"learn<\/p>\n

Tuanis:<\/strong> It is, as defined by the Royal Spanish Academy<\/strong> (RAE www.rae.es<\/a>), a thing of excellent quality. It is also used to express that a thing or situation is \u201cjust fine\u201d<\/em>. Some people believe that the word ‘tuanis’ comes from a derivation of the expression in English \u201ctoo nice\u201d<\/em><\/strong> (or very good), but it actually comes from Malesp\u00edn, a code of war from the XIX century\u00a0by the Salvadoran General Francisco Malesp\u00edn, which changed the letters of the word \u201cBueno\u201d<\/em><\/strong> (good in Spanish).<\/p>\n

Examples of use: This is tuanis! Everything is tuanis? (fine)<\/em><\/p>\n

\"learn<\/p>\n

Upe!<\/strong>\u00a0This word is used when knocking on someone\u2019s door or entering a house. According to historian Costantino Lacariz, in his book \u201cEl Costarricense\u201d<\/em> <\/strong>the announcement comes from the Spanish Colonial period and has a religious background. This greeting, announced at the doorstep of houses, was typical in Nicoya, who annexed it to the celebrations in honor of the Virgin of Guadalupe, their Patron Saint. Devotees would knock and ask for charity. \u00a1Upe!<\/strong> is the shortest version of the long expression: \u00a1Una ayudita para nuestra Patrona la Se\u00f1orita de Guadaluuuuupeeeee!<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Examples of use: Upe! Hello.<\/em><\/p>\n

\"learn<\/p>\n

Yodo:<\/strong> Meaning a cup of brewed coffee.<\/p>\n

Examples of use<\/em>: Brew up some yodo this morning. Want some yodo?<\/p>\n

These words, called \u201cCostarrique\u00f1ismos\u201d<\/strong> are a group of slang phrases that have been adapted or invented by our ancestors and that our generations have inherited. Many of them remain in our colloquial language and are generally accepted and understood by all “ticos\u201d<\/em><\/strong> alike. When someone hears them they know they are talking to a \u201ctico\u201d.<\/strong><\/em> We invite you to use them. They are history, part of our living language.<\/p>\n
